In the water · mornings
The doorstep breaks are the reason ATABAY exists — five to ten minutes on foot, first light to yourself. When you want a wave with company, Encuentro works year-round, seven minutes by car.
In the air · afternoons
Mornings glass off, afternoons the trades arrive — punctual, most days of the year. Cabarete, one of kiteboarding's world capitals, is a few minutes east. Ride until the light goes gold, then drive home the short way.
On horseback
Stables around Perla Marina ride the beach at low tide — hard sand, no traffic, green hills behind. An hour on a horse recalibrates what "beachfront" means.
On foot
The shoreline collects walkers: tide pools, empty coves, fishermen who know your face by week two. Twenty minutes along the water and you're in Encuentro for a coffee.
At the table
The closest table is a barefoot walk away: Natura Cabana, the eco boutique hideaway on Perla Marina's shore — stone bungalows under thatch, two open-air restaurants, a spa and morning yoga by the water.
Beyond that, restaurants and beach bars string the coast from Sosúa to Cabarete — fresh fish one night, wood-fired the next. The quiet is what you come home to.

Eight waves · minutes on foot
The wave at the channel is called El Canal — an easy paddle out and a takeoff you'll have to yourself on most mornings. The other seven? You'll learn their names standing on the sand, not reading a website. Old charts wrote dragons over water like this. Some of it stayed unknown.

Playa Encuentro works year-round — the north coast's most consistent wave, with cafés, restaurants and people who moved here for the same reason. Mornings come glassy, the water sits at 25–28 °C — boardshorts, all year — and the prime season runs October to April. This one you're allowed to look up.

Atabey was the Taíno goddess of water, fertility and the moon. The Taíno were the first people of this island — her name belongs to this coast.
